Application Process for International Students

Paul Smith’s College welcomes students from international communities looking for a unique college experience in the United States. Located in the heart of the Adirondack Park, a vast, six-million-acre park in Northern New York, the region has played host to two Winter Olympic Games and students enjoy easy access to alpine and Nordic skiing, as well as canoeing, kayaking and hiking in the High Peaks.

Located within a short drive of the villages of Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, our campus is an hour’s drive south of Montreal, Quebec, and two hours west of Burlington, Vermont – providing ample opportunity for visiting nearby cities, while enjoying the natural environment of the Adirondacks.

Due to the time sensitivity of processing international student applications, we request that applications for admissions be sent before Nov. 30 for the spring semester, and before July 14 for the fall semester.

To apply to Paul Smith’s:

  • Complete the admissions application
  • Personal Statement/Essay (one page minimum)
  • Submit your Official Transcripts from your high schools and/or colleges or universities you have attended. Please note, that if your transcripts are not from an accredited American school, you will need to provide a certified translation from a service such as World Education Services Inc. or Josef Silny and Associates, Inc.
  • Official copy of English Proficiency Test Scores. Paul Smith’s College accepts the following minimum scores:

    TOEFL - 550/79/213 (paper/internet/computer), TOEFL Test Code - #2640

    IELTS – 6.5

    EIKEN – Grade Pre-1
  • Confidential Statement of Finance, which are certified bank statements to cover all expenses, or notarized letter(s) of support from financial sponsor(s).

Of note:

  • Please plan for expenses to cost approximately $43,500 in U.S. funds
  • You are responsible for providing all documentation in English
  • Paul Smith’s does not offer an ESL program

Once we have reviewed your application and documents, and if you are accepted, you will receive an official acceptance letter and instructions on how to confirm your intention to attend Paul Smith’s College in the mail. You will then need to submit a deposit of $250 in U.S. funds to the college before we can issue an I-20 (your certificate for eligibility for nonimmigrant student status) via the payment options listed below. This one-time fee is only refundable if you are denied access to the U.S. during the visa process.

Upon confirmation of your acceptance and enrollment, you will need to pay an I-901 fee (student and exchange visitor information) of $200 to the Department of Homeland Security. In order to enter the country, you must present both your Paul Smith’s College I-20 and the I-901 payment receipts. If you are already attending college in the United States, and are transferring to Paul Smith’s, simply request a transfer form from your current college.

Once you are accepted to Paul Smith’s, you will be mailed paperwork from the college’s Health Services Office, which requires you to get a complete physical exam and get any inoculations that are not up to date. You are required to submit a record of your inoculations to the college before you are able to attend classes.

To Be Aware Of:

  • You will automatically be enrolled in the college’s healthcare insurance unless you bring proof of other coverage to the Student Accounts Office when you arrive on campus.
  • You must supply your own linens and bedding. If you need transportation to shop for these items when you arrive, we will arrange this for you.
  • You will need some cash or traveler’s checks to purchase books and supplies when you arrive.

The three methods of payment available to international students are as follows:

Credit Card:

I-20 will only be issued after payment is verified.

Certified Bank Check or Money Order:

Please make sure that amount is in U.S. dollars and payable to Paul Smith's College.
