Countess Alicia Spaulding-Paolozzi Environmental Research and Education Center

In 2008, the Adirondack Watershed Institute of Paul Smith's College will move to a permanent home in the former Harriman Cottage. Though the Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) contributes significantly to the entire Adirondack community through freshwater research, education and conservation, the AWI's ability to grow and offer more services is currently restricted by inadequate facilities.

The $2.6 million project will convert the 1894 cottage, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and one of three remaining buildings from the Paul Smith's Hotel, into the Countess Alicia Spaulding-Paolozzi Environmental Research and Education Center. The college will seek LEED certification of the restoration, which will result in an educational research facility that incorporates a modern research laboratory, provides new life to a historic building, and showcases state-of-the-art environmental systems.

Though we have raised $1.3 million towards the renovation, we are still shy of our $2.6 million goal. Your support will help us house the Adirondack Watershed Institute in a permanent residence, thus keeping the Adirondack waters pure while historically renovating a piece of Paul Smith's history.

If interested in donating to the Harriman Cottage restoration, please contact Hillarie Logan-Dechene, vice president for institutional advancement, at (518) 327-6315, or Dan Kelting, director of the Adirondack Watershed Institute, at (518) 327-6213.
