PSC's Marathon Canoe Team is Victorious in NYS Collegiate Championships in Long Lake Tony Lisella, Allan Powers, Elizabeth Quandt, and De Anna Wasiewski collaborated to win the C-4 Mixed NYS Collegiate Canoe Championships held on Long Lake on September 26th. This foursome overcame a quick start by the team from Hamilton College and kept the gap close until the final mile enroute to the finish. Paul Smith's won in 1:29, while Hamilton College's team finished in 1:29:53.
Lisella, Powers and Quandt had all paddled in canoe races in the St. Lawrence Valley during the spring racing season, and returned to Paul Smith's College early to begin their training for the annual Adirondack Canoe Classic. Ironically, these three paddlers had not paddled together prior to training for this C-4 collegiate race. Each put in several dozen hours over their first month back to the college. De Anna Wasieski took part in a freshman outdoor adventure program (Adirondack Experience) and showed quite an interest in joining the canoe team. This was quite an introduction to the sport.
For each Paul Smith's College paddler, this was their first race in a C-4, where strength and the ability to work together are extremely important. They had worked together for three sessions during the week prior to the race and demonstrated the skill necessary for a 10-mile race.
PSC paddlers Randy Snyder and Matt Carmen teamed to win the C-2 Men's Recreation event in 1:47:03. |
