Coach's Corner - Men's Soccer Playing on a rain soaked, mud sliding field the Paul Smith's College men's soccer team scored a penalty kick goal by Anthony Wolcott in the last 2 minutes of the game after Michael Hall was pulled down inside the penalty area while attempting a shot on goal to beat Fisher College 1-0.
Thirty seconds earlier a Fisher College player missed inches to the left of the net on a clear shot after breaking free from his defender.
Both teams played an inspired game with opportunities to score, but the defense of both teams made outstanding saves and strong counterattacks. The PSC goalie, Ryan Ziegler, made several spectacular saves. Jim Hartwell secured the middle for the Bobcats, while backs Jeff Langschwager, Ryan Lawley and Kyle Reidman thwarted many attempts by the Fisher players to break free for a score. Tre Odums and Evan Utter, playing a double stopper formation were able to mark and defend many of the Fisher College attackers. The rotation of Peter Czaplicki, Rob Cashion, Miles Gifford and Ryan Turgeon closed down the outside lanes and countered with their strong play against very accomplished Fisher players.
The PSC strikers of Michael Hall, Anthony Wolcott and Max Kreuger kept a constant pressure on the Fisher defense forcing them to double and triple team them at times, which allowed the PSC defenders, time to recover and mark the Fisher attackers.
The Paul Smith's College Men's Team played with conviction, heart, inspiration, determination and the love of the game. It was one of the best games they have played this year and for that I congratulate them and can only say how proud I am of them as a team in a tough season.
