PSC Soccer Update —

MEN v. CANTON

The Bobcats fought their toughest battle of the season Wednesday under the lights at SUNY Canton, facing off against a powerful and talented international side. Junior Ryan Lawley put PSC on the scoreboard early with a close-range shot in the third minute assisted by freshman Alex Roache.

The score remained 1-0 until the 20th minute when Canton scored their first goal, followed by a second just 4 minutes later. After that, Paul Smith’s ratcheted down its defense to shut down every Canton attack for the remaining 65 minutes.

Offensively, the Bobcats outshot Canton in the second half, including near misses from Freshmen Alex Dalley and Max Curtiss, and Sophomore Anthony Ventello. Senior Robert Cashion had the best shot of the match for both sides, with a hard hit from deep in the right corner of the box.

With four minutes remaining, starting freshman goalkeeper Ryan Little had to step off the field following a severe hit to the jaw in a previous play. Little made 10 saves before sophomore Harrison Turk took over to finish the match with two key saves.

This is the only loss for the men’s soccer team; they leave for Hampshire College and NHTI this weekend and are ranked 5th in the nation with a 6-1-1 record. With several near-goals this match, they clearly demonstrated that they are a force to be reckoned with in both the YSCC and in the USCAA. Their next home game is October 7 at 6pm.

WOMEN v. CCC

The women faced off against 2010 national champions Clinton Community College Wednesday, losing a close 0-1 match. Freshman goalkeeper Asenath Brooks played very well with 24 saves, and the defensive line of Town, Peterson and Kruppenbacher remained solid throughout.

The women had a hard time stringing their passes together, and played 30 minutes of the second half without a shot. After the 75th minute of play PSC picked up the pace, possessing the ball 95% of the last 15 minutes. Their best chance to score came in the 87th minute with a pass from senior Joelle Guisti to freshman Kara Nipper. Nipper blasted a close-range shot on goal that was snagged by the CCC keeper.

PSC plays away this weekend at Hampshire College and NHTI, and return home to host NCCC on October 5 at 6:30pm.
