Stefan Bibb is again leading the Paul Smith's College Bobcats Nordic skiers, and is currently ranked second in the Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference, headed into nationals. Bibb is the only member of the Nordic team who entered Paul Smith's College with a legitimate Nordic ski training and racing background, while most of the remainder of the athletes have strong endurance training backgrounds from cross country running, canoe racing, trail running, backpacking, and triathlons.
This is the first year Paul Smith's College has featured a full women's team since 1992. The women were led this year by Dana Miller, who transferred to Paul Smith's from Colorado State.
This is the second year since the re-birth of the Nordic ski team at Paul Smith's College. Paul Smith's College was a perennial national power as a junior college, frequently winning the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) titles and with several all Americans in the 1970's 1992.
Paul Smith's College joined the USCSA in the 1990 91 season, and both the Nordic and alpine teams competed at nationals in Bend, Oregon and then in the 91 92 season at nationals in nearby Lake Placid, New York.
United States Nationals have been held at Paul Smiths, New York in both 1952 and 1953, with the Olympic Team selection for 1956 team held at the Paul Smith's College course.
The nordic ski team is a member of the United States Collegiate Ski Association (USCSA), and particpates in the Adirondack Division of the Mideast Conference. The primary competitors include Cornell University, Cornell University, West Point, WPI, and the University of Maine - Presque Isle. Paul Smith's College looks towards continued success with the return of senior Stefan Bibb, a two-time All-American, and the addition of Matt Piper and Peter Freire.
Message From the Coach
Jon Santor returns for his second season leading the Paul Smith's College Nordic ski coach at Paul Smith's College. Jon skied at Paul Smith's College at the regional and national level, and has increased his knowledge and performance base immensely since graduation. With our returning core of endurance athletes who have picked up Nordic ski racing skills over the past few years, along with our young skiers who entered the college with solid Nordic ski racing backgrounds, we expect solid performances from the Bobcats this coming winter.
