Check out the Live Moth Cam!

Paul Smith's College Prof. Janet Mihuc, who leads Project Silkmoth, has donated a columbia silkmoth cocoon to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake to raise and release - see the live moth cam here! One of the moths emerged on Sunday, May 25.

The columbia silkmoth can be found in the Adirondacks from late May through June, but little is known about their population here. Mihuc, an entomologist, is studying the species.

Project Silkmoth is a citizen-science project to document sightings of giant silkmoths in northern New York State. Anybody can participate - all you have to do is spot one of the many target species between May 15 and July 30, and report the sighting on a form on the Project Silkmoth website.
