Help support the Paul Smith's College VIC by joining the Friends of the VIC. Membership is available at a range of levels, starting with a $45 annual contribution.
Skiing and Snowshoeing at the VIC
Check out the most recent trail conditions. Skiers and snowshoers must purchase a season pass, or a day pass, to use the trails during the winter months. The VIC is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., seven days a week.
Wednesday, March 26 – Astronomy Night at the VIC
Learn about the springtime constellations, vernal equinox and meteor showers. We’ll have a lecture and then pull out the 14-inch Celestron (deep space) Telescope. 7:30 p.m. $10/person. Free for Friends of the VIC. Preregistration appreciated; please call (518) 327-6241.
Thursday, March 27 – Armchair Traveler Lecture: Mt. McKinley/Denali
Join Jack Drury at 7 p.m. for a slide show on one of the first 100 attempts to scale the highest mountain in North America: 20,320 ft. Mt. McKinley in Denali National Park, Alaska. This was one of Drury's first major adventures. In 1971, while a senior in college, Drury joined the National Outdoor Leadership School for its first attempt to climb this challenging peak. $5/person. Friends of the VIC, season-pass holders and students, faculty and staff are admitted free. This program is underwritten by the Friends of the VIC.
Friday, March 28 – Winter Owl Prowl
Join Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister at 7:30 p.m. for a winter owl prowl. $10/person, $5 for Friends of the VIC. Children under 12 free when accompanied by an adult. Saturday and Sunday, March 29 & 30 – Adirondack Maple Weekend
The Paul Smith’s College VIC is holding an Adirondack Maple Weekend with sugar bush tours, maple confections, workshops, family activities and a maple run.
Saturday, March 29 – Sugar House Grand Opening
The grand opening of the VIC Maple Sugar House runs from noon-2 p.m. The maple king and queen, selected by Paul Smith's students, will do the ribbon cutting at 1 p.m. The event is hosted by the Campus Sustainability Office. Refreshments will be served.
Saturday, March 29 – "Sap to Syrup" Maple Activity
Work with Paul Smith's College VIC sugar makers Tom Manitta and Kyle Dash to experience all aspects of the syrup making process. Participants will go home with a pint of fresh maple syrup. The program runs from 1-4 p.m. $25/person. Preregistration required. Limited to 10 participants per session. Contact: Brian McDonnell, email@example.com.
Sunday, March 30 – Maple Sap 5K Run
Fill up a quart bottle with sap and run, or walk, it to the VIC Sugar House for processing. The event starts at 10 a.m. Every runner wins syrup! Preregistration requested. $20/person. Friends of the VIC save $5. Part of the Adirondack and New York State Maple Weekend.
Saturday, April 26 – SAM Fest
Paul Smith's College and TAUNY (Traditional Arts in Upstate New York) will hold a daylong festival celebrating science, art and music in the mountains from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The event will feature musical performances by north country musicians, presentations on Adirondack climate-related topics, a panel on climate in the Adirondacks, traditional folk and visual arts, maple syrup and refreshments, and a showing of "Green Fire" – an award-winning documentary on Aldo Leopold.

Adopt a Sugar Maple
Support the development of maple sugaring at the VIC by adopting a tree for $50. We'll do the tapping, and you'll be investing in the education of an intern and the equipment to take care of your tree. You'll also get a quart of maple syrup from the tree when it's ready.
