Our Philosophy

Our Philosophy | Policies & Procedures | Accessing Services | Legal Information & Forms | Handling Disputes

Individuals are the experts about their own disabilities.  While the college challenges people with disabilities to accept the freedom and responsibility of directing their own lives, we also believe that all students deserve the opportunity to succeed to the best of their abilities.  Learning specialists assist people with disabilities in exercising more control over their own education, in increasing their independence and self-determination, and in completing degree requirements.

The Center for Accommodative Services offers alternatives and options that allow students to fully participate in academic pursuits at Paul Smith's.  It is up to the student to make their own decisions and to initiate actions which ultimately lead to success and enable them to contribute to, as well as share responsibility in, the Paul Smith's College community.

Services will not be initiated until the student requests them.  The student has the right at any time to discontinue services.  Students may refer themselves to the Academic Support Center for extra help in any subject, or professors may refer students. The academic support coordinator obtains information from the student about how they are doing in the course before assigning a student tutor.
