The learning specialist in the Center for Accommodative Services work with students with disabilities to determine their needs and find solutions to them. Here is the general procedure to request accommodations:
- Students must identify themselves in order to receive services.
- Students return the Disability Accommodation Services Request included in their acceptance letter.
- If the student desires access to services, the student is requested to discuss their concerns further with a learning specialist. An interview on campus is recommended.
- Submit documentation and sign a release allowing the information to be passed along as necessary.
- Documentation is kept in a confidential file in the Center for Accommodative Services.
- During Orientation, the student and learning specialist meet to make needed referrals or accommodations in advance.
- The student is asked to contact their learning specialist upon arrival on campus each semester to request a personal interview.
- If appropriate documentation has not been forwarded to the Center for Accommodative Services, then the student and the learning specialist must complete the Intake Form for Temporary Accommodations (PDF).
- The learning specialist and the student confer to determine legitimate educational accommodations and to notify their faculty. The learning specialist may refer the student to other professional staff as needed.
- Complete the Faculty Notification Form (PDF) to request accommodations needed in classes for the semester.
- The student takes the notification form to each professor, explains the nature of their learning problem and the request for accommodations, obtains signatures to verify notification and understanding, and returns the form to the Center for Accommodative Services for placement in the student's file.
- Make a follow-up appointment.
This process needs to be repeated at the beginning of each semester when the student's classes and/or faculty change.
