Parking
This policy establishes traffic and parking procedures for use by all individuals on the Paul Smith's College campus to enhance the safety and security of the people, vehicles, and property of those using the campus parking and roads. It provides for the enforcement of regulations by Campus Safety Officers and for an appeals process.
- General Policy
- The Paul Smith's College parking policy is in effect 24 hrs/day, 7 days/wk. Lot assignments will be enforced during the academic year (late August through early May); all other requirements and provisions are in effect twelve months per year.
- All motor vehicles, including motorcycles, ATV, snowmobiles, boats, and canoes must be registered with Campus Safety and display a current parking permit/decal. Parking permits will be assigned to a specific vehicle and are not transferable. If a second permit is needed for an additional vehicle there will be no charge for the second vehicle, but only one of the two vehicles is permitted on campus at a time.
- Parking areas are assigned to students, staff, and faculty. Vehicles must be parked only in areas designated by the type of permit and number assigned to that permit. A decal number will designate which lot the vehicle owner may park in.
- The campus speed limit is 15 mph. In addition, all drivers must operate their vehicles in a responsibly and obey all NYS traffic laws while on campus. Failure to do so may result in revocation or denial of campus parking privileges.
- Students may not leave vehicles on College property during the summer and between semesters without prior permission from the Director of Campus Safety. Faculty and staff working during recess may continue to park in designated lots.
- Any vehicle displaying a current permit that has accumulated more than 5 citations may have the permit revoked.
- Failure to clear any outstanding parking fines shall be grounds to deny future parking permits, and registration and transcripts may be withheld.
- Vehicle Registration and Parking Permits
- All Paul Smith's College faculty, staff, and students must register their vehicle(s), including motorcycles, snowmobiles, boats and canoes. New-student vehicles must be registered with Campus Safety by the 10th day of the student's first semester. Any unregistered vehicle parked on college property will be subject to towing and/or impoundment at the owner's expense.
The lot(s) in which a student is permitted to park may change during the course of the year due to a change in class standing (freshman to sophomore, for example), a change in residence hall, or a move off campus. When such a change occurs during a semester, vehicles must be immediately re-registered. When such a change occurs between semesters, vehicles must be-registered by the 10th day of following semester.
Students who obtain or change vehicles during the semester must register them immediately. Students who obtain or change vehicles between semesters must register them by the 10th day of the following semester.
Currently, there is no charge for parking privileges at Paul Smith's College, but vehicles must be registered with Campus Safety and display a valid permit. The following are required to register a vehicle and receive a parking permit:
- Valid student identification (for student vehicles)
- Valid driver's license
- Proof of current vehicle registration with the state of origin
- Proof of Insurance
Campus Safety will provide parking permits/decals at the time of registration. Student parking decals must be properly affixed in the lower left corner of the rear window of the vehicle. If the decal is improperly placed, the owner of the vehicle is in violation of the parking policy. Direct questions about decal placement to Campus Safety (327-6300). Any vehicle with an altered parking decal or permit is in violation of this policy. Such vehicles may be towed from campus and the owners are subject to fines.
