Sustainability Title Paul Smith's College

Policies and Committees

Policies:
American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment – Paul Smith's College President John W. Mills was one of the first to sign this pledge to neutralize carbon emissions and lead the way on teaching students to improve society.

Energy Star appliances - Since 2007, all appliances and electronic equipment purchased by the college have met federal Energy Star guidelines. The college's Climate Commitment Committee initiated this policy, as well as the institution's commitment to construct only LEED-certified buildings in the future – which promises to be vitally important as fuel costs rise.

Environmental Resource Management Policy – Paul Smith's is committed to conserve and best utilize natural resources wherever possible. One example: We use only 100 percent post-consumer content recycled paper, per a recommendation by the Environmental Resource Management Committee.

Proposed Sustainability Fund – A $25 Campus Sustainability Fee, paid by all students, covers this fund, which provides a pool of money for campus sustainability projects. We expect to raise more than $22,000 a year through this fee when implemented in 2009.

Committees:
President’s Climate Commitment Committee – Developing a carbon neutrality plan for the Paul Smith's campus; reconvened in 2007 by President John W. Mills.

Sustainability Council – Provides oversight and support of the college's goal of carbon neutrality, as pledged through our participation in the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. Currently, the Council is preparing the college's Campus Sustainability and Climate Action Plan (S-CAP) for reaching carbon neutrality.

Recycling Action Team (RAT) – Formed in 2007 to reinvigorate the college’s recycling program and to encourage greater compliance among staff, students and faculty. The Recycling Action Team coordinated the college's participation in RecycleMania starting in 2008.

Campus Sustainability Center- This office, inside the Lakeside Dining Hall, is a coordinating office and meeting place for members of the campus community interested in sustainability. The center is currently staffed by Paul Smith's students.
