Matt Piper wins Clarkson Invitational
First individual to win an XC race for Paul Smith's since 1991
The Paul Smith's College Nordic Ski team opened up their season today racing in the Clarkson Invitational held at Mount VanHoevenberg in in Lake Placid. What was originally supposed to be a two day race was condensed to just one day due to the frigid temperatures predicted for Sunday (1/23/11). The racers competed in a pursuit style race where they skied 5k using the classic technique then had to switch over and ski another 5k using the skating technique.
On the women’s side, our lone female contender Annie Jardin (SO - Mexico, NY: Mexico Academy) had a strong race finishing in 7th place with a time of 48:51 for the 10 kilometer course. Annie skied two strong laps and had a very smooth transition when she was switching skis and poles midway.
The men’s team was led by Matthew Piper (JR - Morrisville, VT: People's Academy) who won the race with a time of 32:10. After battling Clarkson’s Alex Benway for the entire race, Matt was able to pull away in the last kilometer opening up about a 20-meter lead by the finish line. Piper's individual win was the first for the Paul Smith's College nordic ski team since 1991, when Kris Seymour was leading the team's performances each weekend. Rounding out the scoring for the Bobcats was Kyle Dash with a time of 44:37 and Jake Dillon in 52:21.
Additionally PSC had two skiers complete their first races today; Timothy Grossman and Josh Buchanen started their skiing careers by racing this difficult race format, finishing in 53:32 and 1:03:43 respectively.
The men’s team finished in 4th overall just 7 points behind West Point Military Academy and 16 points ahead of Hamilton College.
Next weekend's Eastern Conference races will be the Cornell Invitational, in Hanover NH, where the skiers are slated to compete in both a 10K skate and 10K classic race over the two days of racing.
