PAUL SMITHS – When "Modern Marvels," the long-running show on The History Channel, needed to find experts on using an axe, they knew just where to turn: The men and women of the Paul Smith's College woodsmen's team.

On Friday, May 30, at 8 p.m. / 7 p.m. central, the squad will be featured in an episode of the series.

The episode, named "Axes," opens with the highly regarded Paul Smith's squad demonstrating their prowess in chopping through logs in seconds and throwing axes at a target 15 feet away.

The segment was taped during a daylong shoot on campus in early March. Other segments to be featured in the hour-long show include looks at one of the nation's largest axe factories; how the Native American tomahawk is being refashioned as a modern weapon; and the use of the fireman's axe as a rescue tool.

The college's woodsmen's team recently placed second at the annual spring collegiate woodsmen's meet at the University of New Hampshire. The same weekend, one of its members, Matt Bolton, was named the Stihl Northeast Collegiate Timbersports Champion. Bolton will compete for a national title in Georgia this July.

Since first showing on The History Channel in 1995, more than 500 episodes of Modern Marvels have been shown. The series looks at breakthrough inventions, everyday items and many things in between.
