Cross-country skiing and Snowshoeing
Call ahead or visit our Facebook page for an up-to-the-minute trail report - the trails have been closed following the weekend's ice storm. Skiers and snowshoers must purchase a season pass, or a day pass, to use the trails during the winter months. The VIC is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., seven days a week. Closed Christmas Day.
Winter Solstice Sleigh Rides
Saturday, Dec. 21
Celebrate the winter solstice with Bob Brhel and the Paul Smith's College draft-horse team. Take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the beautiful northern forest. Rides will be offered from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Donations will benefit the draft horse program.
No-School Days: All about Snowshoes
Monday, Dec. 23
Children aged 7-11, join VIC educator Michelle Berrus from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. to learn all about snowshoes and how to use them. We will explore different ways of making snowshoes and make our own mini versions that can be used as a dream catcher or as a Christmas-tree ornament. Bring your snowshoes, a camera, your outdoor clothes for playing in the snow and a lunch. Participants must register by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18. No-School Days: Learning Wilderness Skills
Friday, Dec. 27
This program teaches children aged 7-11 about wilderness survival. Join us from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and learn to make a fire, build a shelter and set up a trap. Bring your outdoor clothes for playing in the snow and a lunch. Reserve your spot by 5 p.m. Dec. 22. Call (518) 327-6241. $35/person, $25 for Friends of the VIC.
Father Time Snowshoe Run
Sunday, Dec. 29
Registration for this 5K race starts at 9 a.m. The race starts at 10 a.m. $10/person, $5 for Friends of the VIC. Winners will receive a handmade trophy. Hot cocoa and cookies will be provided.
No-School Days: Winter Tracks
Monday, Dec. 30
Children aged 7-11 are invited to join VIC educator and ecologist Michelle Berrus from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. to learn about the VIC's winter animals. We'll analyzing their tracks and make our own for decoration and reference. Bring your guidebooks, outdoor clothes for playing in the snow and a lunch. Reserve your spot by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27. Adopt a Sugar Maple
Support the development of maple sugaring at the VIC by adopting a tree for $50. We'll do the tapping, and you'll be investing in the education of an intern and the equipment to take care of your tree. You'll also get a quart of maple syrup from the tree when it's ready. (Shipping not included) Adoption papers are available at the VIC front desk. Makes a great holiday gift!
Winter Wonders Art Show
Artists Nancy Brossard, Sandra Hildreth and Edith Urban and photographers Mark Kurtz, Eleanor Sweeney and Karla Brieant are exhibiting their work at the Paul Smith's College VIC until Wednesday, Jan. 29. Free - underwritten by Friends of the VIC.
Purchase an $8 map at the VIC and use it to find your way to different checkpoints where you collect secret codes. Participants who find at least five codes are eligible for prizes and a 10 percent discount on a compass at Blue Line Sports in Saranac Lake.
