MCKENZIE MOUNTAIN WILDERNESS HIKE

McKenzie (3861’) Elevation Gain 2340’ This 7.2 mile round trip will lead us into the McKenzie Mountain Wilderness. McKenzie Mountain offers spectacular views of the High Peaks, and sneaky views in all directions hidden throughout its multiple false summits. The hike will challenge all aspiring Saranac 6’ers, but is a steep and rewarding climb matching any high peak. This peak is halfway through the Adirondack Hundred Highest Peaks.

DEBAR MOUNTAIN HIKE

Debar Mountain (3305’) Elevation Gain 1725’ 7.4 mile round trip departs from the popular Meecham Lake State Campground. This mountain offers 180 degree views from the summit. Hikers will explore the summit of this Northern Adirondack Peak, and search for remnants of the former fire tower. Along the hike we will explore the biodiversity of coniferous and hardwood forests.

SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK
THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR

Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts continues its popular Shakespeare in the Park series with a production of “The Merry Wives of Windsor”.  Enjoy a fun-filled comic romp with just the right amount of sneaky revenge in a spectacular outdoor setting. Chairs are available but limited; please feel free to bring your own. Donations to support the arts are appreciated.

NATURE PRINTING ON SILK

Using textile paints, we will print on fabric and paper with freshly-collected plants and other materials. After some practice prints, a silk scarf will be provided for printing and a final treatment with silk dye will result in a beautiful and useable piece of art. This workshop will be offered twice.

NATURE DRAWING FOR ADULTS

Learn how to draw what you observe, using simple materials including pencil, pen, and watercolor pencil. The workshop will take place outdoors with observations directly from nature, with technical aspects taught in the classroom. This is a beginning drawing class. No experience required.

NATURE PRINTING FOR KIDS

With the instructor, children will gather plant material outdoors and will briefly discuss various leaf forms. Indoors, the children will learn how to use acrylic paints to print with the leaves on paper and then fabric. The take-home project will be a printed flag banner.

Soils are our most important resource, and the beauty of their many colors add so much to our landscapes! In many great artists’ works, the “Earth Colors” are dominant. Be a natural artist today and come paint with soil from the VIC! This workshop is led by two soils experts, Janella and Becca, who will also share soil secrets with the participants.

A HOME FOR CRICKET – LEATHERWORK

In this workshop with regional Blacksmith David Woodward, participants will learn how to make their own little leather bag. Dave will demonstrate how to make a cricket out of a fork, so participants will leave the workshop with their cricket in its leather bag! This workshop is a great hands-on experience for kids (aged 8 or older) that will help them develop their fine motor skills, imagination and desire to create objects using elements from their immediate environment!

THE NATURE OF POETRY

In this program, poets Nadine McLaughlin and Caperton Tissot will read from their works and talk about various approaches to writing poetry. Participants will then go out on the trails and compose their own lines about the nature around them. The session will end with reading and talking about those poems.

MUSHROOM WALK WITH SUSAN HOPKINS

Join Mushroom expert Susan Hopkins for a casual walk in the woods to look at all the mushrooms and fungi on the trails. You will discuss and identify poisonous and edible species and point out some species of medicinal value, too. This walk will take approximately two and a half hours and be held rain or shine. Bring a lunch if you want to stay longer. Books and reference materials will be provided for more study after the foray on the picnic tables under the pavilion.

Naturalist and Guide Ed Kanze

GUIDED NATURALIST WALK WITH ED KANZE

Join guest naturalist Ed Kanze, licensed Adirondack guide and author of “Adirondack: Life and Wildlife in the Wild, Wild East”, for a walk at the VIC! Our July 11 walk features the Boreal Life Trail – you might spot calopogon and white fringed orchids or find a black-backed woodpecker tapping in the bog. Our August 22 walk explores some of the classic Adirondack habitats the VIC has to offer, including marsh wetland, peatland, and deciduous forest.

GUIDED BIRD WALK

Join NYS Licensed Guides and professional birders John and Pat Thaxton on a Saturday Morning Bird Walk in search of seasonal birds as they set up nesting territory, sing and show off their mating displays, and rear their young. Limited supply of binoculars are available for free loan.

Wild Ramps

Come and learn to identify local wild edible plants with our expert Pat Banker from Cornell University Cooperative Extension. Pat will answer your questions about how to cultivate those plants, use them, cook them, and more! You will be amazed by what Mother Nature is offering, from gluten free options to easy to find solutions right at your feet!

GUIDED CANOE PADDLE AT THE VIC

Join VIC Naturalists for a guided paddle on Barnum Pond via Barnum Brook. This two-hour program starts with a brief walk to our dock and includes at least one hour on the water. This is a perfect way to spend the morning for both novice and experienced paddlers. The boat, life vest, and paddle are all provided.

ADIRONDACK SOILS TOUR

Learn about the different soils in the Adirondacks, how they formed, what their properties are, and why they matter. This walk will take you to up to six different locations on the VIC property where soils horizons can easily be observed. During this casual walk with three soil scientists, you will learn about facts you need to know to be a good Earth citizen.

ORIENTEERING WITH COMPASS & GPS

Orienteering is an essential skill to competently find your way around when foraging, hunting, hiking and exploring in the woods of the Adirondacks! This orienteering workshop will help you build the confidence and skills you need to wander around in wilderness, navigate terrain, explore habitat, and confidently make it back to camp safely. We will work with three important orienteering tools: a compass, topographic map, and cell phone based GPS app. Using these tools and your new skills, you will navigate to points in the Paul Smith’s College VIC. Bring your smartphone with the Avenza app downloaded and a compass.

Primitive shelters come in many shapes and sizes, but have one important thing in common—they keep you safe, warm and dry. From the quick and simple debris shelter to more technical lashing and layering, learn how to best prepare for a possible overnight.

Calories count in a survival situation, and once you run out, you’ll want to use as few as you can to craft a way to get your next meal. Fishing spears and a variety of hand-crafted traps are the focus of this clinic. And worry not—we won’t be using them on live game.

No lighter, no problem. While not necessary in all survival situations, fire is nonetheless the most quintessential piece of backcountry knowledge. Bow-drilling, rock and steel, and how to best use materials will be the focus of this workshop.

Whether used to collect wild edibles or to pass off as a uniquely-Adirondack gift, baskets are just one of the birch tree bark’s many uses. Pick between a number of different styles then cut and sew your way to a one-of-a-kind container.

HANDS-ON GREEN TECH FOR KIDS

Kids ages 8 to 16 will learn about sustainability and the basics of green technology. They will build and test a simple water filter from recycled materials and a pizza box solar oven. We will discuss some of the problems facing our environment today and they will come up with their own ideas of simple technology that can reduce or resolve these issues. They will build models of their ideas and present them to the group.

SIMPLE GREEN TECH FOR KIDS AND ADULTS

Adults and children ages 8 to 16 who are partnered with adults will learn about the major problems facing our environment today. They will discuss potential solutions to challenges such as pollution, energy demands, transportation, water, etc. Participants will choose two projects to build with choices such as a solar cellphone charger, a vertical garden structure, a simple wind turbine, or paper-making. They will discuss various challenges to our environment and create models or prototypes of technology to reduce or resolve the problems.

FOOD PRESERVATION MASTER CLASS

Cornell Cooperative Extension will be offering a Certified Master Food Preservation class in Franklin County just in time for home gardeners, people wishing to prepare summer’s bounty for winter enjoyment, and anyone wishing to learn how to can and preserve foods for sale to the public using science based, safe methods.

The MFP class is a 2-day, intensive training to be held at the Paul Smith’s College VIC, Paul Smiths, NY, on Saturday, August 26, and Sunday, August 27. Class is both a hands-on and classroom instruction in canning a variety of products, freezing, dehydrating, and making jerky. Boiling water, low acid canning and pressure canning of low acid foods will be covered. Jams, jellies, tomato based products, soups, meats, vegetables, and wild game canning will be covered.

Participants will take a pre-test and upon taking an exam at the end of the 2-day class, will receive a certificate of completion. All classes are taught by CCE Certified Master Food Preservation class instructors Pat Banker and Ceely King.

FOREST BATHING

Let us take you onto Barnum Pond Trail for an ease-full walk and invite you, through a series of brief ever-changing activities, to open yourself to all of the sights, sounds, smells, textures and tastes of life in the forest. Discover the joy of being present, fully present, to yourself and to the natural world, with all your senses engaged. Slow down and unplug: no goals, objectives or need to accomplish anything. The forest will do the rest.

“Yoga on the Deck” is back at the VIC with instructor Jackie Foster! Jackie is a Kripalu Certified teacher registered with the Yoga Alliance. This outdoor yoga experience is open to the public and to those with all levels of yoga experience.
