Shawn Cleveland is an Associate Professor in Paul Smith’s College’s graduate Natural Resources program. Based in Missoula, Montana, he teaches primarily online and joins students on campus during residency sessions.
Shawn earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Montana and his Ph.D. from SUNY ESF. He began his academic career as a faculty member at ESF’s Ranger School in Wanakena, New York, before teaching at Pacific Lutheran University in Washington State.
A wildlife ecologist and natural resource professional, Cleveland is known for his work tracking and studying Northern Giant Hornets in the Pacific Northwest. His research helped develop radio telemetry techniques used to locate and eradicate the first nests discovered in the United States, and later took him to South Korea to advance tracking technologies for invasive species research.
His interests include wildlife ecology, conservation science, and the application of field-based technologies to natural resource management.
