Paul Smith’s College Professor Curt Stager was recently featured on Mountain Lake PBS for his collaboration with Mohawk artist and author David Kanietakeron Fadden on a book exploring 12,000 years of Indigenous history in the Adirondacks.
Their book, The First Adirondackers: 12,000 Years of Indigenous Peoples in the Adirondack Uplands, challenges the long-standing belief that the region’s uplands were uninhabited before European colonization. Drawing on Indigenous oral traditions, artwork, and scientific research, Fadden and Stager document the enduring human presence in the Adirondacks and offer a more complete understanding of the region’s history. Stager contributes his expertise in natural sciences and environmental history, including research documenting more than three dozen sites where ancient Indigenous artifacts have been found.
